The feeling of calmness of operators in a control room is an important sign. They understand “the process”, and it is “under control”. Therefore, repetitive tasks like feeding waste, controlling the furnace, etc., are not their responsibility or task – that's the PLC operator's responsibility.

An control room offers monitoring of what's happening, and field operators can safely interact with the SCADA system. The control room can also provide space for technical meetings. Of course, if something bad happens (force majeure), such as a fire, there's always the option to escape and leave the installation in a safe state, as the software will automatically shut down the installation completly.
